Math Tutoring
“How do I do well in math?” Is one of the most common subject problems students face. It doesn’t have to be this way. While it comes in many shapes and sizes, find out how math tutoring can improve your child’s experience.
PRIMARY MATHEMATICS
Primary Mathematics is often called ‘foundational math’. This is because it’s the foundation that all high school math is built off. This can include things such as multiplication, fractions, and shape formulas.
However, this is often the time where students start to self-identify as either ‘math-brained’ or not ‘math-brained’. This can be a big determining factor in whether a student enjoys and does well in math in high school. To address this, we focus on showing the student that anyone can learn the fundamentals.
GENERAL MATHS
General Math is commonly referred to as ‘real-world or Practical’ maths. This is because all of its content relates to real-world scenarios. This may include topics such as Money Management, Data collection/Interpretation, and Applied Geometry.
This subject suffers from stereotyping amongst students as “the easy math subject”. Oftentimes being considered the required math subject for those who feel they aren’t ‘math-brained’. Because of this, students’ issues with the subject are often tied to their self-perception as someone who isn’t good at math. The problem is usually that they don’t try, and subsequently, don’t succeed.
Our tutors are aware of this. In response, we place a higher emphasis on the psychology of a student’s perception towards the subject. This allows for greater long term successes with maths in general.
MATHS METHODS
Maths Methods is a subject that shows how Mathematics can be applied to a diverse range of scenarios. Since this involves going beyond basic applications, the complexity of the subject grows. This has given it a reputation of a high difficulty subject in school. A student will learn a variety of topics such as Functions, Rates of Change and Optimisations.
The common problem for this subject is the difficulty. This sounds obvious, but most students choose Math Methods only for a higher ATAR rank. This can often lead to frustration as students don’t see a real-world application. For a subject like Maths Methods, studying is a necessity. A necessity that many students don’t fully understand how to do.
Our Tutors can offer advice on personal study techniques as well as helping to personalise the complex content in a way the student is going to understand.
SPECIALIST MATHS
Specialist Maths is a subject is often taken with Math Methods. This is done to receive a higher ATAR, but may also be taken to pursue math-based careers. Some topics students will cover are Calculus, Matrices, and Real/Complex number systems.
Specialist Maths shines a light on any foundation math the student has missed. It isn’t uncommon for the first term to see large amounts of students fail. As such, specialist math tutoring can be beneficial. The key to this math tutoring is identifying what exactly that topic was and helping to clarify it first. Then showing how it’s relevant to the subject as a whole. We do this by working backward with a student to identify the gaps and fill them with a personalised approach.
